With the development of science and technology and industry, higher requirements for materials, such as higher strength, resistance to high temperature, high pressure, low temperature, corrosion resistance, wear and other special physical and chemical performance requirements, carbon steel can not fully meet the requirements.

Deficiency of carbon steel: 

(1) Low hardenability. In general, the maximum quenching diameter of carbon steel quenching is only 10mm-20mm. 

(2) The strength and yield are relatively low. such as ordinary carbon steel Q235 steel σs is 235MPa, and low alloy structural steel 16Mn σs is more than 360MPa. The σs/σb of 40 steel is only 0.43, far below the alloy steel.

(3) Poor tempering stability.

Due to the poor temper stability, carbon steel in the tempering process, in order to ensure a higher strength to adopt a lower tempering temperature, so that the toughness of the steel is low; In order to ensure good toughness, the use of high tempering temperature strength is low, so the comprehensive mechanical performance of carbon steel is not high.

(4) Can not meet the special performance requirements. Carbon steel in the anti-oxidation, corrosion resistance, heat, low temperature, wear resistance and special electromagnetic and other aspects are often poor, can not meet the needs of special use performance.
